Meet Angelika

// Notes from the wings
  • 172 cm, shoulders built by tennis rather than a gym
  • Hair black and poker straight, eyes brown
  • Early twenties, English, dry more often than chatty
  • Small gallery rooms, live jazz, three tennis mornings a week
  • Sleeps in Mayfair, works the WC2 circuit

The house lights drop on Aldwych at half past seven, and she is reliably the calmest person in the room. Angelika measures 172 cm, carrying the shoulders of somebody who plays tennis three mornings a week rather than somebody who trains for photographs. Her hair is black, long, worn without a wave in it. Her eyes are brown, and they have finished reading a room before she has taken her coat off. The clothes are quiet and well cut, and the jacket ends up over the back of a chair within ten minutes of sitting down.

Confidence in her case runs at low volume. The playful streak only surfaces once a table has warmed up, usually as a dry remark landed at precisely the wrong moment, and she listens far better than most people manage to. Conversation happens in English. Small gallery shows are the weekend habit, and she will steer you towards a single room of twelve paintings over a blockbuster every time, on the grounds that you might actually remember it. Jazz she takes live or not at all. Early twenties, and in a hurry about nothing.

Her WC2 evening opens with one drink in your hotel lounge, then the short walk to Cellar Door, the lamplit room tucked beneath the pavement near Aldwych, where the piano starts late and the audience is small enough to feel conspiratorial. She wants the table nearest the keys. She goes quiet the moment the set begins and stays that way until it breaks. When it finishes the Strand is still bright, the river sits two minutes downhill, and she is in no rush to decide what happens next.

Mayfair is where she sleeps, Strand and Aldwych is where she works, and seven o'clock tonight is realistic more often than not. Send her name to booking and you will hear back plainly, one way or the other, about the night you want.

Her home stage is Mayfair, and she travels from there to the venues this house covers. Her full listing sits with the rest of the company on the companions page.

What an evening costs

Seven onwards is her window, and the run from Mayfair to a WC2 lobby takes twenty minutes on a kind night. Two hours at £500 buys a drink upstairs, a full set downstairs and the walk back afterwards. Your name is matched to the room over WhatsApp first, and only then does her evening go onto the call sheet.

Each length on the ladder, the travel rule and the terms for a change of plan are set out line by line on the rates page, and the wording to send sits on the booking page.

04 Scene

An evening with Angelika

Twenty to eight, one gin and tonic taken slowly, and an argument about whether the gallery near your hotel is worth an hour of anybody's evening. She will decide that it is, or that it absolutely is not, and either way she has a reason ready. By half past she is steering you east along the Strand, past the theatre queues and the people photographing the buses, towards a door that looks like a service entrance and is not.

The room below holds perhaps fifty people. She takes the seat nearest the piano, orders something dry, and does not speak again until the set breaks, at which point she has a great deal to say about the left hand of whoever is playing. After midnight the choice is yours: a late plate at a counter near the Piazza, a slow loop down to the water, or back to your room with the curtains pulled shut. She is content with all three, provided nobody at the table reaches for a phone.

// Asked backstage

Angelika, in her words

The second, always. By then the trio has stopped being polite with one another, the people who came for a photograph have gone home, and what is left is a room of listeners.

With one drink before we go anywhere at all. Five minutes of sitting still and we have stopped being strangers, which saves the rest of the night a lot of work.

Courts before breakfast, pictures after lunch. I have never managed to explain why it is both, and I gave up trying to years ago.

// Nothing pinned here yet

No moderated note has been left for Angelika on this site so far. We publish first names, the month and the words themselves, we never invent a line, and we never print anything a companion would rather keep private. When guests do write in, their notes appear here exactly as they arrived.
