Meet Karolina

// Notes from the wings
  • 174 cm, slim, notably straight backed
  • Black hair cut sharp and straight past the shoulder, brown eyes
  • Late twenties, precise English, a delayed dry wit
  • Piano, the opera season and long architecture walks
  • Lives in Covent Garden, three minutes from Bow Street

Karolina keeps a seat plan in her head the way other people keep a map of the underground. Tall at 174 cm and slim with it, she wears black hair cut into a sharp straight line past the shoulder, and her brown eyes hold back a great deal until she has decided otherwise. Late twenties. She dresses with almost nothing going on: a column dress, one ring, hair pinned up when the evening is formal and left down when it is not, and she is never the most decorated woman in a room.

Poise is the obvious quality and discretion is the deeper one. She rarely volunteers anything about herself and returns the conversation to you without it feeling like a technique she learned somewhere. The English is precise. The wit is dry and tends to land a half second after everyone else has moved on, which is her favourite trick. She plays piano properly, follows the opera season closely enough to have views on casting, and walks the city looking upwards at buildings rather than into shop windows.

Her home is three minutes from the Royal Opera House, and that shapes everything about how she hosts an evening. Drinks first in the amphitheatre bar if the timing allows it, the performance, then a quiet supper afterwards where she will explain why the second act worked and the first one did not. On nights when nothing is on she walks the same route and talks about the architecture instead, which is no less interesting once she gets going.

The streets this house covers are her own, so Covent Garden reaches her in minutes rather than half an hour. Opera evenings want a few days for tickets, everything else is far simpler, and booking will say plainly what is free this week.

Her home stage is Covent Garden, and she travels from there to every venue on the circuit. Her full listing sits with the rest of the company on the companions page.

What an evening costs

Weeknights are easiest, and opera evenings want a few days so the tickets can be arranged around her. Four hours at £900 is the usual shape here: drinks upstairs, the performance itself, then supper once the house has emptied. The evening is written in once the hotel and room have been matched on WhatsApp.

Each length on the ladder, the travel rule and the terms for a change of plan are set out line by line on the rates page, and the wording to send sits on the booking page.

04 Scene

An evening with Karolina

She suggests arriving early enough for a glass upstairs, partly for the view over the Piazza and partly because she enjoys watching the house fill up. She will have read something about the production and will not repeat a word of it unless asked, in which case you should set aside a good ten minutes and a second drink.

Through the performance she is entirely still, which people notice more than they expect to. Supper afterwards matters more to her than a bar: somewhere with a kitchen open late and tables far enough apart to talk properly. That is when she loosens, argues about singers, and lets slip the occasional thing about herself. Walking you back to the hotel afterwards is a habit of hers, whatever the weather happens to be doing.

// Asked backstage

Karolina, in her words

Then you will enjoy it more than the regulars do. Two sentences of plot beforehand, nothing else from me until we are outside again.

Because discretion is not something I switch on for an evening. It is how I prefer to live, and it happens to suit this work rather well.

Most days, badly, with the windows firmly shut. Piano is the one thing I am content to remain an amateur at.

Karolina, in the book

Karolina is on call today. Weeknights easiest, opera evenings a few days ahead Message the desk and we will confirm the hour before anything is held.

// Nothing pinned here yet

No moderated note has been left for Karolina on this site so far. We publish first names, the month and the words themselves, we never invent a line, and we never print anything a companion would rather keep private. When guests do write in, their notes appear here exactly as they arrived.
